Don't feel too bad about it, mine requires the choke even during those hot southern summers. Probably depends more on how abused your ride is than on whether or not the white spacer is in place. Mine is open piped, with the air screw let out 3.5-5 turns (I can't remember which, haven't fooled with the carb in over a year). Now if you have the original plug and air filter, you might need more choke than normal. Mine are both original, bike would probably behave better if I ever get around to servicing it. Even the oil is about 8-10 months old now, with about 2500 miles on it. Maintenance? I don't need no stinking maintenance! ;-)
